Questions, honestly answered.
Most of what people ask before their first visit. If something below isn’t covered, email mmbkgriffin@gmail.com and we’ll add it.
Is this really free?
Yes. Labor is free. Most common parts (oil, filters, wipers, bulbs) come from our donation-funded parts cabinet. If your repair needs a specialty part we don’t stock, we’ll talk with you before ordering anything — you decide whether to cover that cost or hold off.
Do I have to be a member of the church?
No. The coop is open to anyone in the Pendleton community who needs help keeping their vehicle on the road. There is no membership requirement, no statement of faith to sign, and no expectation that you attend a service. We’re glad to meet you regardless.
Where exactly does this happen?
In the parking lot of Pendleton Seventh-day Adventist Church in Pendleton, Oregon. After you reserve, your confirmation will include the address and any specific instructions about which entrance to use.
How often do service days happen?
We schedule a handful of service days a year — typically once or twice a quarter, with extra clinics around community events. Open service days are always listed on the Reserve page.
What kinds of repairs do you handle?
Most routine maintenance and small-to-medium repairs: oil changes, brake service, batteries, fluids, lights, wipers, tires, belts, basic diagnostics. See the What to Expect page for the full list and the things we can’t do.
What if my car needs more than a one-day fix?
Honesty first: many repairs are bigger than a parking-lot service day. When that happens, we’ll do whatever we can safely accomplish (often a temporary fix or a thorough diagnosis), write up what we found, and recommend a trusted local shop for the rest. You won’t leave guessing.
Will you do state inspections?
No. State-required safety or emissions inspections must be performed by a certified inspector at an authorized facility. We can pre-check a vehicle and tell you what to fix before you go in for inspection, but we can’t sign off on the certification itself.
What if I can’t make my appointment?
Just let us know. Email mmbkgriffin@gmail.com or call/text Brendon at (918) 510-7722. The earlier you cancel, the easier it is to fill the slot for someone else on the waitlist.
Can I donate to support the coop?
Yes. Donations flow through Pendleton Seventh-day Adventist Church (a 501(c)(3) non-profit) and are designated for the Auto Repair Coop. See the Donate page for details.
I’m a mechanic. Can I volunteer?
Please do. Service-day volunteer technicians are the engine of this thing. Sign up on the Volunteer page and Brendon will be in touch about the next service day.
Who’s behind all this?
The coop was founded by Brendon Griffin and is supported by the Pendleton Seventh-day Adventist Church. The website and reservation system are supported by Direct-Me LLC. The About page has the full story.
